The NBA scores app built for iPhone Duo

iPhone Duo unfolds into the biggest screen ever on an iPhone, and Hoopster was rebuilt to use all of it: live scores, standings and the full game center, folded or unfolded.

What is iPhone Duo?

iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone. Folded, you use its narrow cover screen like any iPhone. Unfolded, it opens into an inner display that is wider than it is tall, closer to a small iPad than a phone. It's in stores from October 23, 2026, starting at $1,999 in the US.

That shape is great for sports, where you want the score, the clock and the details at the same time, but only if the app is built for it. Apps made before the Duo open in a smaller window with black bars around them until their developers update them.

Hoopster, folded and unfolded

Hoopster is built for iPhone Duo. It's the same app on both screens, laid out for each.

Hoopster's Home screen on iPhone Duo, in the Knicks' colors. Folded, it's a regular iPhone app; unfolded, everything spreads across the inner display. On both, the tabs run down the side.
  • Unfolded: your team's next game, the countdown to tip-off, the record and your player use the full width of the inner display. The tabs run down the side, so nothing covers the score.
  • Folded: every screen fits the narrower cover display, down to the longest titles like Conference Standings.
  • Everywhere: all 30 teams, each in its own colors, and every tip-off in your own time zone.

The game center on the big screen

The inner display is where a game comes alive. Open any game for the score, scoring by quarter, the full box score and play-by-play, with room to read them without zooming or turning the phone. Here's the whole app on the unfolded Duo, in our 28-second App Store preview:

Standings, the playoff picture, league leaders, player pages and news use the extra width the same way. Rate any game out of five stars, and keep a journal of the games you've watched.

Live Activity, widgets and Apple Watch

Hoopster isn't only for when the phone is open:

  • Live Activity: just before your team tips off, the score, the clock and every quarter appear on your Lock Screen on their own. See how to get NBA scores on your Lock Screen.
  • Widgets: Next Game, Tonight's scoreboard, My Team and My Player for the Home Screen and Lock Screen, in your team's colors. See how to add NBA widgets.
  • Apple Watch: your team's schedule, live scores and a countdown on your watch face. On game night, your team's game rises to the top of the Smart Stack.
  • Hide scores: watching later? One switch hides finals in the app, the widgets, Apple Watch and alerts. See how to avoid spoilers.

Scores, box scores, standings, the schedule, the small Next Game widget and the first five minutes of every Live Activity are free. Hoopster MVP ($2.99 a month or $19.99 a year in the US) adds the full-game Live Activity, the other widgets and the Apple Watch app.

How to tell if an app is ready for iPhone Duo

Unfold the phone and open the app. An app built for iPhone Duo fills the inner display edge to edge. An app that isn't yet ready opens in a phone-sized window with black bars on either side, because it was built before Apple's tools knew about the Duo.

If an app you use shows black bars, check the App Store for an update: developers make an app Duo-ready by rebuilding it with Apple's latest tools. To check for updates, open the App Store, tap your account picture and pull down.

Get started on iPhone Duo

  1. Install Hoopster from the App Store, or update it if you already have it.
  2. Pick your team. The whole app, and its widgets, switch to its colors.
  3. Leave Start automatically on in Settings, so the Live Activity appears before every game.
  4. Unfold the phone on game night.

Questions, answered

Does Hoopster work on iPhone Duo?

Yes. Hoopster runs natively on iPhone Duo, on both the cover screen and the unfolded inner display, with no black bars. It needs iOS 26 or later, which every iPhone Duo has.

What is the best NBA app for iPhone Duo?

It depends on what you want. To follow scores, standings, box scores and your team with Live Activities and widgets, Hoopster is built for iPhone Duo. To stream games, you need the NBA app (League Pass), ESPN, Peacock or Prime Video, depending on the game.

Can I watch NBA games on iPhone Duo?

Yes, in the apps that stream them: the NBA app with League Pass, ESPN, NBC's Peacock and Prime Video, depending on the game. Hoopster doesn't stream games; it's for scores, stats and following your team.

Why does an app have black bars on iPhone Duo?

It hasn't been updated for iPhone Duo yet, so it opens in a phone-sized window on the inner display. Check the App Store for an update.

Is Hoopster free on iPhone Duo?

Yes. Scores, box scores, standings, the schedule, the small Next Game widget and the first five minutes of every Live Activity are free. Hoopster MVP adds the full-game Live Activity, more widgets and the Apple Watch app. Hoopster is independent and not affiliated with the NBA.
